History

The mission’s founding dates back to Padre Serra’s decision to establish a midway point between San Diego and San Carlos Borromeo. The fourth mission began on September 8, 1771, near present-day Montebello. The site selection was ideal, enabling the mission to become one of the most prosperous in Alta California.
