History

Santa Anita Park has a long and storied history that dates back to the 19th century. The land where the racetrack now stands was originally part of the Rancho Santa Anita, a Spanish land grant that covered much of what is now Los Angeles County.

In the early 20th century, a group of investors led by businessman and racing enthusiast E.J. Lucky Baldwin began developing the area as a destination for horse racing and other outdoor activities. They built a racetrack on the site, which opened in 1907 and became known as the Santa Anita Park Jockey Club.
